BERKLEY, Iowa — Tony and Lourdes Sweet welcomed a small army of bicyclists to their rural Berkley home Tuesday for free home brew and burritos.

“We do this every year for the BRR riders in February,” said Tony Sweet, formerly of Perry, “so we decided to do it for the RAGBRAI riders this summer, too.”

Two shades of beer were supplied: a first-rate Hefeweisen and an equally delectable Belgian-style white beer.

Among the visitors was a company of riders from Bike Army, a group of “fun-loving, bike-riding Army vets” that is based in Montgomery, Minnesota, but attracts team members from across the U.S.

Lourdes Sweet’s toothsome chicken-rice-and-bean burritos were a match for her husband’s homebrew, and no one left the Sweet acreage hungry, including Steve Schmidt of Kansas City, a family friend who made the trek to rural Berkley for the big day.
