Sally Swenson of the Dallas County Hospital was recently named one of the 100 Great Nurses for 2016.

Sally Swenson, R.N., education manager at the Dallas County Hospital, was recently named one of Iowa’s 100 Great Nurses for 2016. Swenson has been part of the DCH team since 2005.

“Sally is a great teacher, leader and mentor to her fellow nurses and students,” Donna Vandehaar, DCH chief operating officer, said. “She has a true passion for helping others and we congratulate her. The impact that Sally has made on her peers and patients during her tenure at Dallas County Hospital is astounding.”

Vandehaar said Swenson’s “most significant contribution is her passion for education and best practices. We are so proud of her and her accomplishments.”

Swenson, who has more than 30 years of nursing experience, obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan., and her Master’s degree in Community Health Nursing and Nursing Education from the University of Iowa. In her career at the DCH, Swenson has been a staff nurse, nurse educator, nurse manager and, most recently, education manager.

Swenson has been a major influence on the hospital’s nursing staff, as numerous testimonials from her colleagues attest.

“Sally is a wonderful teacher and has been a great mentor to me,” said Emily Taylor, R.N. “She is always willing to show staff how to do something or answer any questions. She is passionate about nursing and continues to develop new ideas and education that betters our community and the health of the patient’s we serve!”

Every year the 100 Great Iowa Nurses program asks patients, co-workers, friends and family members to nominate an outstanding nurse for recognition. Nominees undergo a two-part review process, including their rating on a point system by a panel of reviewers who are all past honorees, with the 100 Great Iowa Nurses honored each year at a ceremony created for the state of Iowa by nursing and community leaders.

The 2016 honorees will gather May 1 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Monies at 3 p.m. for the 12th annual celebration of Iowa’s Great Nurses. More than 1,000 family members, friends and colleagues will congregate to recognize the winners for their outstanding careers and achievements. Similar celebrations are held in Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina and Texas.

Nurses selected for this honor represent many sectors of healthcare, working as nurses in hospitals, long-term care facilities, schools and offices. They represent all practicing areas of nursing, including acute and sub-acute care, school nursing, nurse leaders, academics and many others.
