DES MOINES — Many will remember the 2020-2021 school year for the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Madrid, it is a fair bet the success of their track and cross country programs will be high on the list of future memories as well.

The Tiger boys were the Class 1A state cross country champions this season. They followed up that success with a team title at the state track meet May 20-22, and, for good measure, were joined by the Tiger girls, who also won a state championship. The crown is the first team state title in many sport for the Madrid girls.

The Madrid boys scored 65.5 points in winning honors, with Lisbon second at 57 and Earlham third at 52. Madrid scored 51 points in winning the girls title, with South O’Brien second at 41 and Tri-Center Neola third at 40.

Former Perry resident Andy Lowe is the Madrid girls head coach. He is assisted by his father, Tom. Steve Perkins is the Tiger boys head coach, with Brock Hinkel assisting.
