Funeral arrangements with military honors will soon be completed for Lewis Mason, a U.S. military veteran of the Vietnam War who died in mid-August in Winnebago County in northern Iowa.
Mason will be buried in Violet Hill Cemetery, which suffered serious damaged one month ago in the derecho wind storm.
“We still haven’t set a burial date and time,” Perry City Clerk Liz Hix said Tuesday. “We wanted to give the cemetery time to get ready for a large gathering after the storm.”
Hix said the city has also been coordinating the funeral services with the Dallas County Veterans Affairs office.
Little is known of Mason, who died unattended last month in a Winnebago County motel.
“We plan to give notice in a timely manner so everyone that wants to attend can have time to make arrangements,” Hix said.
