UPDATE: Grimes man victim in Saturday’s fiery crash

GRANGER, Iowa — A 62-year-old Grimes man sustained fatal injuries in the motor vehicle crash early Saturday evening on Iowa Highway 141.

According to the Iowa State Patrol crash report, Kevin Daryl Brown of Grimes was driving a 2005 Toyota Camry and was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Iowa Highway 141 near 190th Street in Granger when the crash occurred.

Brown’s vehicle first struck a 2023 Chrysler 300 S that was traveling eastbound. Following the first collision, Brown’s Toyota spun around and was struck by a 2013 KIA Sportage.

Eyewitnesses said the Toyota burst into flames following the second collision. Brown, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. It took authorities several days to ascertain his identity.

The driver of the KIA, Veya Makuta, 29, of Des Moines, who was also wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries in the crash and was transported to Mercy Hospital by Dallas County EMS. The driver of the Chrysler, Daniel Alfred Gonzalez Jr., 24, of Ankeny, was not injured.

The ISP was assisted at the scene by Granger Police, Granger EMS, Granger Volunteer Fire Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s office and Dallas County EMS.
