A winter storm watch issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines will be in effect Sunday afternoon through midday Monday for the Perry area, with the “most impactful weather” likely late Sunday night and Monday morning, when “significant amounts of freezing rain are possible, resulting in a very difficult Monday morning commute,” according to the NWS.

Ice accumulations up to one-third inch are predicted by Monday. Accumulations of mixed sleet and snow up to one-half inch are also expected, with light southeast winds from 5 to 10 mph.

The weather service said light snow or a wintry mix is possible when precipitation begins, “but it will then transition to mainly freezing rain across much of the state before switching back to light snow, drizzle or freezing drizzle before ending altogether.”

The NWS predicts “extremely hazardous travel due to ice covered and very slick roads. Sidewalks and parking lots will be slick. Tree damage and power outages are possible, with ice accumulations and winds likely leading to snapped power lines and falling tree branches.”

The ice accumulations will make travel “dangerous or impossible,” the NWS said. “Travel is strongly discouraged. Commerce will likely be severely impacted.”

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of emergency, the service advises.

The Perry area is under the winter storm watch along with the towns of Pocahontas, Laurens, Rolfe, Fonda, Gilmore City, Sac City, Lake View, Odebolt, Wall Lake, Schaller, Early, Rockwell City, Manson, Lake City, Pomeroy, Denison, Carroll, Jefferson, Audubon, Exira, Guthrie Center, Panora, Bayard, Casey, Waukee and Adel.

Also affected will be the towns and ghost towns of Black Corners, Booneville, Bouton, Dallas Center, Dawson, De Soto, Dexter, Gardiner, Garretville, Gibbsville, Granger, Granger Homesteads, Kennedy, Linden, Minburn, Moran, Ortonville, Panther, Perry Yard, Redfield, Van Meter, Wiscotta and Woodward, according to the Weather Underground.

  1. What’s up with all the incorrect town names? I don’t think Blacks Corner is a town. I see five or six that are not towns. Who wrote this report?
