UPDATE: Three of four Clinton County crash fatalities in their 90s

Four people died Wednesday night and one was injured when a car and a passenger van collided head on in rural Clinton County. 

Three of the four people who died Wednesday night when a car and a passenger van collided head on in rural Clinton County were in their 90s, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report.

The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. March 16 in the 4100 block of Iowa Highway 136, about halfway between Goose Lake and Clinton, where a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Donald June Bartels, 90, of Clinton, was traveling westbound and collided head on with a 2014 Honda Odyssey, driven by Benjamin Earl Ehrhart, 94, of Clinton, that was traveling eastbound.

Bartels and Ehrhart were killed in the crash, and two passengers in Ehrhart’s vehicle, Donna Mae Ehrhart, 91, of Clinton, and Phyllis Ann Krogman, 81, of Clinton, also died. A third passenger in Ehrhart’s vehicle, Robert Grego Krogman, 87, of Clinton, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mercy One Clinton Medical Center by the Clinton County EMS, the ISP report said.

The accident remains under investigation, the ISP report said. Investigators concluded that three of the four fatality victims were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s office, Clinton County Medical Examiner, Andover Volunteer Fire Department, Andover Ambulance, Goose Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department, Camanche EMS and Medforce 1 Air also responded.
