Voting facts released for June primary election

The Dallas County Commissioner of Elections has released voter information in advance of the Tuesday, June 4 primary election in Dallas County.

Polling locations: Polls at the following 39 locations will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Any eligible electors of Dallas County may vote at their regular general election/primary election polling location. Any voter who is physically unable to enter a polling place has the right to vote in the voter’s vehicle. Pre-registered voters are required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot. Voters who are not pre-registered – such as voters registering to vote on election day – and voters changing precincts must also provide proof of residence.

Voters who are unable to provide an approved form of identification (or prove residence if required) may:

  1. have the voter’s identity/residence attested by another registered voter in the precinct,
  2. prove identity/residence using election day registrant documents or
  3. cast a provisional ballot and provide proof of identity/residence at the Dallas County Auditor’s office by June 10 at 12 p.m.

Voter eligibility: In order to vote in a primary election, one must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age, not currently judged by a court to be “incompetent to vote” and not convicted of a felony (or must have received a restoration of rights).

Absentee voting: Absentee ballots for the June 4, 2024, primary election will be available to be voted in the Dallas County Auditor’s office beginning on May 15, 2024. Absentee ballots may be cast in person at the Dallas County Auditor’s office at 210 N. 10th St. in Adel during regular office hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Wednesday, May 15, 2024 until Monday, June 3, 2024.

In order to receive an absentee ballot by mail, the absentee ballot must be requested in writing. Forms are available at the Dallas County Auditor’s office and on the Dallas County Auditor’s website. All requests for ballots to be mailed must be received by the Dallas County Auditor’s office by 5 p.m. on May 20, 2024. In order for your ballot to count, it must be returned by the close of polls at 8 p.m. on election day, June 4, 2024.

Voter registration: The deadline to register to vote is 5 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2024. The Dallas County Auditor’s office will be open on May 20, 2024 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After this date, new voters may still register at the Dallas County Auditor’s office or may register on election day at the polling place for the precinct in which they currently reside. The voter will be required to show proof of residency and identity. One form of ID is a valid Iowa driver’s license with the voter’s current address. The following forms of proof of residency must be current within the last 45 days:

  • Property tax statement
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Government check
  • Other government document

A current photo ID that is valid and contains an expiration date may be used for proof of identity. Among valid documents proving identity are:

  • Out-of-state driver’s license
  • Non-driver identification card
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. military ID
  • ID card issued by employer
  • Iowa high school or college ID
  • Veteran ID

Where to pre-register: Voters may pre-register at the Dallas County Auditor’s office, 210 N. 10th St. in Adel on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Registration forms can also be found on the Dallas County Auditor’s website. Registration changes of name, party and address: If you are already registered within Dallas County, then changes to your name, party or address may be made at any time up to and including election day. Prior to election day, changes are to be made by the same means as voter registration. On election day, changes are to be made at the voter’s polling place. If the voter has changed his or her residence, then the voter will need to proceed to the new polling site corresponding to the new address.

There were no Libertarian offices filed in Dallas County.

Public testing of the voting equipment will begin Thursday, May 16. This test will be conducted at the Dallas County Auditor’s office at 210 N. 10th St. in Adel. Testing will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until completed.
