COLFAX — The Woodward-Granger wrestling team received a blow in their season opener Tuesday as senior Devan Kirkman (170 pounds) was lost for the season after suffering a dislocated shoulder.
Hawk coach Dave Smeltzer said Kirkman was taken to a hospital (he did not specify) where the extent of the injury was discovered. Smeltzer called Kirkman “a tough kid” and said he and the team would miss him.
W-G opened with a 44-27 win over Pleasantville before suffering a 42-34 setback to the hosts.
Several Hawks finished with double victories, including fourth-ranked 182-pounder Tanner Vermaas, who scored a technical fall (19-3, 4:51) over Pleasantville’s Austin Flesher before pinning C-M’s Isaac Clouse in 55 seconds.
Austin Scharlau had two pinfall victories at 152, sticking Cale Anthony (PLS) in 1:11 and Will Dunsbergen (C-M) in 3:54 while Cody Fisher nailed Evan Mann (PLS) in 4:59 and Nick Barnes (C-M) in 5:40 at 195 pounds.
Cole Carmen (145) scored an 18-7 major decisin over Nathan Evans (C-M) while also receiving a forfeit, with Colt Palmer (126) sticking Kyla Lampman (C-M) in 14 seconds and winning a forfeit while Hunter Pierce (106) and Cody Garland were also given forfeits.
Other wins for W-G came at 132 when Jay Dorenkamp pinned C-M’s Tim Carroll in 2:54, and at 138 when Tae Calderon won a 12-7 decision against Pleasantville’s Devon Flesher.
The Hawks return to action at 9 a.m. Saturday when they host the annual Dennis Field Invitational. W-G will entertain Montezuma, Ogden and Perry Tuesday before visiting the Ogden Duals Dec. 10.
