Education and activism went hand in hand at last June’s anti-Bakken-pipeline protest flotilla on the Des Moines River near Pilot Mound.

The Water Protectors will return Saturday, June 17 to the Des Moines River near Pilot Mound for a day of celebration along the river. The event marks the first anniversary of the group’s flotilla launched in opposition to the Dakota Access pipeline.

Although the pipeline started carrying North Dakota-produced oil June 1 under an executive order from President Donald Trump, a June 14 ruling by a U.S. District Court judge could mean a temporary shutdown.

The ruling has put wind in the sails of the Water Protectors and the Bakken Pipeline Resistance, which is also hosting the Saturday float near the E18 (130th Street) bridge east of Pilot Mound in Boone County.

“Whether it’s your first time or 1,000th time on the river, all are welcome,” said a Water Protector spokesperson. “Come celebrate, explore and share stories on the Des Moines River.”

Canoes and kayaks will be available to rent, or paddlers may bring their own. Paddlers will check in between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Norton’s Ford Access along Des Moines River, with an orientation at 11 a.m. prior to entering the river.

A noon ceremony is planned at the County Road E18 bridge, where the Dakota Access pipeline crosses beneath the Des Moines River.

A shuttle will run from 1-2 p.m. from the exit point at the North Fraser Ramp to the starting point at Norton’s Ford.

The Pilot Mound Community Center at 112 S. Pilot St. in Pilot Mound will serve as the focal point for food, music and fellowship from the end of the float until 7 p.m.

Activities and organizational tables will be available at the Pilot Mound Community Center throughout the day. The family-friendly gathering will also include activities for non-paddlers.
