The city of Perry will participate in a statewide tornado drill Wednesday, March 27 between 10-11 a.m., according to a Perry Police Department spokesperson.

In the event of genuinely severe weather, the test will be postponed until Thursday March 28, Perry Police Department Communications Specialist Lori A. Riley announced Tuesday.

“The siren tones will cycle as it does in a true emergency,” Riley said. “We do not sound an all clear. The annual tornado drill is an excellent time to review tornado safety plans, conduct tornado drills in companies, schools, and other facilities. Participation in this annual event is encouraged.”

A tornado watch means that a potential exists for the development of a thunderstorm or tornado. People in the watch area should be prepared to take cover.

A tornado warning means a tornado or thunderstorm is imminent. People in the warning area should take cover.

In case of an actual warning, you should take cover in a storm shelter or basement. If you do not have a basement, go to the smallest interior room, such as a bathroom or closet.

Move away from windows to protect yourself from flying glass or debris. If possible, cover yourself with a mattress or blanket.

If outdoors, try and find cover in a sturdy building, or lie down in the lowest area near you that is away from objects that might be thrown about.

Residents are reminded the storm sirens are to alert persons who are outdoors at the time of the warning. You may not hear them if you are inside your home. If you are indoors or in a vehicle, please tune to a local online or broadcast news source for up-to-the-minute information or, better yet, purchase a weather radio.
