Woodward-Granger wrestlers 3-1 at Field Duals

WOODWARD — Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas finished with a 4-0 mark to take top honors in the five-team Dennis Field Duals Saturday, with host Woodward-Granger recording a 3-1 record for the second spot. Colfax-Mingo was 2-2, West Central Valley 1-3 and Martensdale-St. Marys 0-4 to complete the team standings.

M-SM is ranked fifth in Class 1A and has three rated grapplers, with SEW/MD 10th in the team ratings with four ranked matmen while WCV’s Tye Joint is seventh at 145 pounds while W-G’s Tanner Vermaas is No. 4 at 182 in Class 2A. All save M-SM 132 pounder Joshua Tibbits, ranked second, were in action Saturday.

W-G opened with a 54-27 win over M-SM before defeating Colfax-Mingo, 48-30. SEW/MD topped the hosts, 45-24, with the Hawks bouncing back to claim a 58-24 win over WCV.

Cale Pritchett (160) and Cody Fisher (195) each finished 4-0 for the Hawks. Pritchett had two forfeits before defeating Josh Sundberg (SEW/MD), 4-1, and pinning Jason Mayland (WCV) in 5 minutes, 52 seconds while Fisher opened with a forfeit, pinned Xavier Anderson (C-M) in 41 seconds, rallied for a 6-4 sudden victory 1 win over Alex Hommer (SEW/MD) and tallied an 8-0 major decision against Riley Algreen (WCV).

Vermaas dropped a tough 6-3 decision to top-ranked Logan Schumacher (M-SM) before receiving a forfeit. He then pinned Bryce Vandelunen (SEW/MD) in 1:24 and Dylan Homer (WCV) in :46.

Austin Scharlau was 3-1 at 152 with a forfeit, a pin of Jordan Lescaleet (C-M) in 1:03 and a pin of Cole Sackett (WCV) in 56 seconds while Aaron Sperling finished 3-1 at 170 with a forfeit, a 7-6 win over Cameron Warner (C-M) and a pin of Alan Wallace (WCV) in 2:48. Sperling’s loss came at the hands of fifth-ranked T.J. Dierking (SEW/MD).

Hunter Pierce (106) suffered a loss by fall to ninth-rated Cole Cassady (M-SM) but had a 7-0 win over Zack Barnes (C-M) and a 44-second pin of Drew Kelso (SEW/MD) to go with a forfeit to finish 3-1. Also 3-1 was 145-pounder Gabe Yingst, who had a win by forfeit, a pin of Dillon Fouts (M-SM) in 50 seconds and a 20-second stick of Braden Miller (WCV).

W-G’s Tate Lettow (120), Colt Palmer (126), Jayden Dorenkamp (132) and Cole Carman (138) all finished 2-2, with Lettow receiving two forfeits and Palmer and Carman one each. Palmer pinned Mollie Greve (C-M) in 22 seconds and Carman pinned Drake Sharp (SEW/MS) in 4:57, with Palmer losing to No. 2 Brady Kyner (SEW/MD) and Carman to WCV’s Joint. Dorenkamp pinned Kyla Lampman (C-M) in 22 ticks and Louden Foster (WCV) in 1:32.

Tyler Lawernson was 1-3 for W-G, pinning Tyler Noga (M-SM) in 23 seconds and dropping two matches at 220 while losing once at 285. Evan Olson (285) was 1-1 with a forfeit for the Hawks, with Dillon Fogarty dropping once match at 220 and one at 285.

Other team scores saw SEW/MD whip WCV, 63-15 and M-SM, 71-12, and CM, 57-21. C-M was a 48-30 winner over M-SM and over WCV, 54-28 while WCV managed a 42-36 victory over M-SM.

W-G returns to action Tuesday when they host Montezuma, Ogden and Perry in a quadrangular set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
