Fisher to semifinals; Vermaas earns podium spot

CLASS 2A STATE TOURNAMENT -- W-G senior 182-pounder Tanner Vermaas (right) rebounded from an opening round upset to stay alive with a win in the consolation round against Austin Angle of Eddyville-Blakesburg.

DES MOINES — Woodward-Granger senior Tanner Vermaas won a 6-4 decision over West Delaware junior Harrison Goebel to secure a spot on the medal stand at the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament.

Hawk freshman Cody Fisher (47-5) continued to turn heads by reaching the 195-pound semifinals with a 5-2 decision over Creston/Orient-Macksburg senior Jackson Mikkelson (47-11).

He faces Sam Moore  (32-6, Sr.) of Mt. Vernon this evening, with a trip to the championship bout up for grabs.

Vermaas  (49-4) will meet Kyle Benson (50-9, Sr.) of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in a third round consolation match.
