Former Perry chiropractor gets 10 years for sex abuse

Daniel Joseph Duffy, 53, of Perry was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday following his conviction on a charge of third-degree sexual abuse.

According to court records, Duffy committed a sex act with a child around 12 to 15 years of age between October 2005 and April 2006. He pleaded guilty to the charge last month in Boone County District Court.

Duffy, a licensed chiropractor, was previously convicted of assault in 2011 in connection with an incident in Perry involving a female patient.

According to records of the Iowa Board of Chiropractic, Duffy “masturbated while treating the patient, touched his penis to her lower back and ejaculated on the patient’s lower back. Buccal swabs were obtained from the patient’s lower back” that matched Duffy’s DNA.

Duffy had his chiropractic license suspended for five years beginning Sept. 7, 2011.

According to a statement released Wednesday by the Boone County Attorney’s office, “The District Court heard from the victim and an immediate relative of the victim’s in an emotional impact statement to the court about the effects of the abuse Daniel Duffy committed on the victim.”

Following the sentencing recommendations, Duffy was sentenced to 10 years in prsion, the maximum sentence for third-degree sexual abuse, and he was placed on lifetime parole with lifetime Iowa Sex Offender Registry requirements.

The Boone County Attorney’s office represented the State of Iowa, and the Boone County Sheriff’s office and the Perry Police Department investigated.
