DES MOINES — David Ray Nelson, 31, of Moravia has been sentenced to six years in a federal penitentiary for possessing child pornography in August 2016.

Nelson was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Stephanie Rose to 72 months in prison and will be required to serve an additional seven years of supervised release following his imprisonment, according to a statement from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Nelson pleaded guilty Jan. 27 to an indictment charging him with possessing child pornography on or about Aug. 25, 2016. The charges followed an investigation into a child pornography ring distributing the illegal materials via a peer-to-peer file sharing network.

A search of Nelson’s southern-Iowa residence by law enforcement uncovered several computers and digital storage devices containing numerous images and videos of child pornography.

The investigation was conducted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Hancock County Sheriff’s office and the Appanoose County Sheriff’s office. This case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney Kevin E. Vander Schel’s office for the Southern District of Iowa.
