WILLIAMSBURG — Perry’s dominance in several of the lower weight classes continued Saturday at the Raider Invite, as Bluejay wrestlers won championships at 113, 120 and 132 pounds.
The trio of Kaleb Olejniczak (113), Zachary Thompson (120) and Zach Stewart (132) improved to an impressive combined record of 104-15 to help the Bluejays place third in the five-team event with 132.5 points. Williamsburg scored 249 points to easily claim the team title, with Mt. Pleasant second at 138, with Grinnell one point behind Perry at 131.5 while Pella completed the field with 126 points.
Third-ranked Olejniczak (36-4) pinned his way through his first five matches, sticking Kaiden Royster (WMB) in 31 seconds, Sam Van Dee (WMB) in 3 minutes and 4 seconds, Dalton Gosselink (GRN) in 3:07 ticks and Corbin Broeker (MP) in 42 ticks. He claimed first place with a 9-3 decision over Jalen Schropp (WMB).
Thompson (34-5), ranked sixth at his weight, scored three technical falls to reach the finals. He stopped Vance Clayotn (GRN), 25-10, in 2:43 and Matthew Widmar (PEL), 26-11, in 3:04 before using 4:58 to top Garrett Jenson (WMB), 26-11. The top spot was claimed with a 16-6 major decision over Alex Farmer (GRN).
Tenth-rated Stewart (34-6) mimicked Olejniczak in beginning his quest with four consecutive pinfalls. He nailed Avante Henley (MP) in 1:11, Cole Bisbee (PEL) in 5:)1, Josh Garrettson (WMB) in 2:55 and Nick Marovets (WMB) in 4:40. He topped 30-4 Kaiden Gosselink of Grinnell in the finals when the Tiger matman defaulted due to injury.
Perry also received a pair of third-place finishes at the invite, with both Adan Medina (11-12 at 170 pounds) and Juan Campos (6-18 at 195) bouncing back from a opening losses to each win their respective third-place match.
Tucker Strough (8-11 at 106) placed fourth for the Bluejays with a 1-3 mark, as did Jacob Nelson (2-14 at 126). Cole Snyder (3-14 at 160) and Cesar Ramirez (1-8 at 182) each finished fourth, with Gabe Cubillo (0-4) taking fifth place at 285, while Miguel Gonzalez (1-15) and Erick Funez (5-32) finished sixth, at 145 and 152, respectively.
The Bluejays left both the 138 and 220 pound weight classes open.
Perry will return to competition Tuesday when they are joined by ADM and Woodward-Granger for a quadrangular at Boone. The Jays will then host AC/GC, Ballard and Humboldt for a quadrangular Thursday before hitting the mats Saturday in the Raccoon River Conference tournament at ADM.
