A transformer reportedly exploded on the grounds of the Tyson Fresh Meats plant near Perry Tuesday about 1 p.m.

A transformer reportedly exploded at the Tyson Fresh Meats plant near Perry about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, commanding the attention of the neighborhood with its loud report.

“I was working on a truck outside and heard a buzz and then boom!” said Richard Bryant of Berkley, who works nearby at Quick Oil Co. After the explosion, there was “a bunch of buzzers going off and now silence,” Bryant said.

He said the transformer “was on the east driveway about halfway in, right next to our lean-to building. I’m guessing that substation shorted out and caused low voltage and made the transformer blow.”

A Tyson representative was not available for comment. Tyler with Tyson’s security contractor said he did not know what happened.
