James Matthew Green, 32, of Des Moines faces multiple felony and serious misdemeanor charges, including false imprisonment, after leading authorities on a high-speed chase Thursday night, at times reaching speeds of 117 mph.
Van Meter Police Chief William Daggett said the pursuit began in Van Meter about 11:06 p.m., when Van Meter Police Department Officer Erik Faust made contact with Green regarding a registration violation.
Green “stopped at our Casey’s” in Van Meter, Daggett said. “The officer ran his plate, and the license plate on the vehicle came back to another type of vehicle. So the officer made contact with him and said, ‘Hey, how come the license plates on this car don’t match?’ and he refused to cooperate in providing any documentation and in that process made his way into the car and took off.”
Green “chose to initiate a pursuit in his vehicle,” a 2006 Dodge Stratus. Faust pursued Green out of Van Meter, north through Adel on U.S. Highway 169 and east through Dallas Center on Iowa Highway 44, at times reaching speeds of 117 mph.
As Green’s vehicle approached County Road R30, “spike strips were deployed by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office, and he was taken into custody,” Daggett said.
Green faces charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession controlled substance, false imprisonment, interference with official acts-bodily injury, eluding, fourth-degree theft, second-degree theft and multiple traffic charges, Daggett said.
There were no injuries in the incident.
Daggett said additional information will be released Friday afternoon after the investigation is complete.
A female passenger was in the vehicle with Green during the chase. She was transported to Grimes and released.
Green is currently held at the Dallas County Jail on $5,000 bond.
