WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger boys improved to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in West Central Conference play with a 56-52 win over Madrid Friday. The win allowed the Hawks to match their win total from the last two seasons, combined.

Madrid fell to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in WCC play with the loss. The teams were tied at 15-all after one quarter, with a 20-12 W-G spurt giving the hosts a 35-27 lead at the intermission.

A 12-9 edge in the third period pushed W-G into 47-36 lead, with the 11-point margin just enough room on the scoreboard, as Madrid used a 16-9 run in over the final eight minutes to close to within four points before falling.

Freshman point guard Bryce Achenbach sparkled for W-G. He sank 6-of-11 shots (including 3-of-4 on 3-point attempts) while draining 7-of-12 free throws to finish with a game-high 22 points. Achenbach also distributed nine assists, grabbed five rebounds and made four steals.

Marcus McConahay had 10 points and nine boards for W-G, with Brady Aunspach adding nine points, Reese Jamison eight, Brody Easter five and Derick Morgan two. Easter blocked four shots and Morgan two.

Braden Gibbons had 19 points to pace Madrid, with Landen Burke providing 17 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking four shots.

W-G visits Panorama Tuesday for their final pre-holiday action.
