The Perry boys soccer team experienced plenty of drama in one of their games Saturday, and then very little excitement in the other.
Twice moved because of weather, the annual Bluejay tourney was finally held at Dewey Field. The hosts defeated Des Moines North, 3-2, on penalty kicks, in the opening game of the tourney. Lewis Central was a 1-0 winner over North in the second contest, then rolled to a 3-0 win over Perry.
Perry (10-5) snatched a late 2-1 lead over North (5-11) on a Mario Saldana goal, but the Polar Bears forced overtime with a late strike of their own.
The Jays grabbed a 1-0 lead after each team after their first attempts on penalty kicks, with North eventually missing two-of-four to fall, 4-2, to the hosts.
Lewis Central (12-3) received goals from Paul Devine in the 5th and 12th minutes for a 2-0 lead, with Luis Espino capping the scoring.
The match might serve as a playoff preview, as the two could meet, May 25, on Dewey Field, with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
Perry hosts Des Moines Lincoln tonight, and will then welcome Pella Thursday in their next two matches.
