Wishing Bob Rounds, sitting far left, many happy returns of the day Aug. 9 were SORE members, clockwise from Rounds, Andrew Bambrick, Ken Finer, Ray Harden, Larry Laborde, Charlie Thompson and Lou Hoger.

Further fattening his friends on the occasion of his Aug. 9 birthday, Bob Rounds of Perry treated the membership of the Society of Retired Expects (SORE) to rolls and coffee at the Perry Perk coffeehouse.

Rounds’ natal anniversary is one in a series of summer birthdays the group celebrates every August, sharing the joy with Tari Mason’s trademark cinnamon rolls and fresh coffee.

Congratulating Rounds on attaining this year’s milestone were Andrew Bambrick, Ken Finer, Ray Harden, Lou Hoger, Larry Laborde and Charlie Thompson.

The SORE cohort also gathered Thursday to celebrate the Aug. 15, 1943, birthday of former SORE member Dick Ehlers, who would have turned 76 this year. Dick died Nov. 24, 2015.

Shirley Ehlers, who married Dick in Ames June 3, 1967, treated the retired experts, some of whom were educators and all of whom are experts, to rolls and coffee.

Dick was the chemistry and physics teacher at Perry High School for 31 years. He came to Perry in 1975 with Shirley and their two daughters, Kirsten and Kim. He retired in 2006 and passed away Nov. 24, 2015.

Dick is remembered as an active member of local religious and civic organizations, such as the First United Methodist Church, the Perry Lions Club, the Perry Star Promenaders — he and Shirley were first-rate square dancers — and the Perry Education Association. He loved fishing and hunting for turkey, pheasant and deer, was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed reading and travelling.

Joining the SORE collective Thursday to honor Ehlers were Andy Bambrick, Jim Caufield, Ray Harden, Lou Hoger, Larry Laborde, Bob Rounds, Dan Spellman and Charlie Thompson.
