Ames-native Carol Montag delivered a soulful performance of folk songs Sunday afternoon in the Perry Fine Arts concert series.
Montag began singing and playing traditional hymns and liturgical songs as a child in church, and her spiritual roots were everywhere evident Sunday, even when playing such pagan anthem’s as Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
Montag’s young-adult influences included the likes of Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins and Joan Baez, but she brings her own unique style and sensibility to a wide variety of original songs as well as traditional and contemporary folk songs, including numbers in Portuguese.
About 50 people attended Sunday’s show in the Perry Performing Arts Center. Montage donated all the proceeds from sales of her records, CDs and T-shirts to the Perry Community School District.
