Registration for the Junior Jay wrestling program will be held at the Perry Public Library from 4-7 p.m. today. The grappling club is open to both boys and girls from kindergarten through the eighth grade.
If for any reason an interested party is unable to register today they may come to the first day of practice on Nov. 4 and sign-up their youngster at that time.
Coaches stress that they do not wish for any boy or girl who is interested in wrestling to miss the chance because of financial need. If financial struggles will limit the participation of a child, parents are urged to speak with a coach so arrangements can be made.
The Junior Jays practice on Monday and Wednesday each week beginning Nov. 4. Beginners will practice from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and advanced wrestlers from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Practices are held in the wrestling room/field house west of Dewey Field and will follow middle school/high school wrestling practices.
Youth are able to attend both practices if they are between skill levels. If you are unsure of where your child will be placed, coaches urge speaking with them so a decision can be made of which level will be best for the youngster.
Junior Jays are asked to bring wear a t-shirt and athletic shorts to practices, and to wear wrestling shoes if possible. As no street shoes are allowed on wrestling mats, youngsters should simply wear socks if they do not own wrestling shoes, which can be purchased from most sporting goods stores or a variety of online sources.
Most important, officials stress, is that all Junior Jays bring with them a positive and coachable attitude and a desire to both learn and have fun.
Coaches understand wrestling might be a new sport for many families in Perry and are eager to answer any questions or concerns. Any questions regarding sign-ups, practice times, youth tournaments or more can be directed to either Junior Jays President Eileen Splendore at eileensplendore@gmail.com or any other of the Junior Jay coaches.
