Hawks streak into district finals

VAN METER — The Woodward-Granger boys basketball team ripped Pleasantville, 58-33, in their Class 2A District 12 meeting Thursday.

The win moved W-G (20-2) into a D12 Final battle against familiar nemesis Van Meter (21-0), who blasted Woodward Academy, 65-45, Thursday. The Bulldogs were fourth last season and handed the host Hawks one of their two losses, a 54-45 decision Jan. 23.

The WCAC rivals will face each other Tuesday at 7 p.m. at DC-G. The winner moved to the Feb. 29 Substate 6 Final, at a site yet to be determined. Albia (17-3) faces Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (9-13) in the D13 Finals.

W-G allowed Pleasantville (11-11) only six points in each of the first two quarters and just five in the third. The Hawks held leads of 12-6, 28-12, and 43-17 after each of the first three frames, respectively.

Nich Buch led the Hawks with 14 points, with Bryce Achenbach adding 13 points. Pacey Moats tallied nine points, Keith Braunschweig seven, Kaya Bowlsby six and Alex Bice five, with two points apiece from Worth Henry and Matt Hansen capping the scoring.

Braunschweig pulled down seven rebounds and Achenbach five, with the latter distributing seven assists.

Teron Mount and Mason Scheve led the Trojans with 10 points apiece.
