When asked how the first day of first grade went, a young boy from St. Patricks Catholic School and a young girl from Perry Elementary had identical responses: “I had fun!”
Beautiful skies, perfect temperatures and a touch of pride helped transform the opening day of the 2015-2016 school year in Perry into a day to remember.
While the St. Patricks students had a remodeled and reconstructed playground that is nearly complete on which to enjoy recess, the parents of Perry Elementary students who are picked up by private vehicle also had something to be excited about: the new parking lot and drive project that has radically transformed the morning and afternoon rush at the school.
With all staff now parking behind (east) of the building and a new, greatly expanded parking lot and drive in front (west), a longtime bugbear appears to have at last been defeated.
Parents and adult caretakers are reminded that they may use anywhere along the inside lane of the drive to drop off or pick up students, with the only restriction being that vehicles may not park in the drive — an adult must remain behind the wheel at all times.
Drivers are also cautioned to recognize and honor the four crosswalks — brightly painted with yellow stripes — that extend across the drive and are for pedestrian and student use. Staff will be located at each position to help ensure safety.
If smiles and excited descriptions of new teachers, new rooms, new friends, etc. are any guide, the new school year in Perry clearly started on a bright note Monday.
