PSST places fifth at IWSC meet Sunday

GUTHRIE CENTER — The Iowa West Swim Conference caps their season each year with a league-wide meet, and this summer the date was pushed back a day due to inclement weather. The outdoor pool in Guthrie Center served as host, with competition held Sunday.

Host Guthrie County won the meet with 302 points, with Greene County second at 254 and Carroll third at 241. Denision (232) finished fourth and Perry (171) fifth, with Coon Rapids (118), Sac City (86), Lake City (64), Manning (27), and Glidden (7) rounding out the field.

PSST 15-18 speedster Jaylene Karolus was first in the 100 fly, 50 freestyle, and 100 long free. She set a new IWSC record in the 100 fly by touching in 55.69 seconds, breaking the old mark of 55.83.

Fellow 15-18 racer Sophia McDevitt was second in the 100 IM and third in both the backstroke and breaststroke. The duo teamed with Quin Mahler-Moreno and Jenna Nelson in winning both the freestyle relay and medley relay.

Mahler-Moreno set IWSC record in the 13-14 IM with a 1:04.54, lowering the old standard of 1:04.78 set in 2017. She also won the long free and the breaststroke.

Madeline McDevitt was fourth in the backstroke and fifth in the butterfly and freestyle. She teamed with Aleah Karolus (swimming up from 11-12), Ellie Hughes, and Kiera Berger to place fifth in both relays, while Karolus was fifth to the wall in the butterfly.

Lillian Lucht (8U) had a strong meet. She won the backstroke, was second in the butterfly, fourth in the breaststroke and long free and fifth in the 25 free. PSST 8U girls Mora Moreno, Maya Anderson, Afton Meyers, and Tiernee Cromwell also scored, placing fifth in the free relay.

Riese Archer, Andrew Dowd, Boomer Deardorff and Townes Wilson (the later pair both swimming up in age class) were fourth in the 15-18 boys medley relay and fourth in the freestyle relay.

Dowd was fourth in the breaststroke and fifth in the free, with Archer third in the backstroke.

Wilson was second in the 11-12 butterfly, fourth in the backstroke, and fifth in the 100 IM, with Boomer Deardorff fifth in the breaststroke.

Dysen Deardorff, Guthrie Wilson, Adrian Quijas and Ray Hughes (swimming up in age) were second in the 9-10 medley relay and fifth in the free relay.

Dysen Deardorff was third in the backstroke, third in the breaststroke, and fourth in the long free.

The 8U boys were led by Renaud Deardorff, who touched first in the breaststroke, 25 freestyle and long free, second in the butterfly, and fifth in the backstroke.

Placing third was the medley relay foursome of Luke Rowe, Matthew McDevitt, Jadiel Pena-Barrios, and Ray Hughes.
