Junior Lydia Olejniczak put her name firmly in the Perry girls basketball record book Wednesday by victimizing visiting Des Moines Hoover with 48 points in their 4A Region 7 quarterfinal.
Perry (9-13) won, 74-58, to set up a Saturday visit to ADM (10-11), with that winner to face either top-ranked DC-G (18-3) or Boone (4-18), who topped Webster City, 48-33, Wednesday in the Region 7 Final Tuesday. Games begin at 7 p.m.
The 74 points were the most scored by the Perry girls since a Dec. 3, 2019 win over Greene County by an 81-38 margin.
Olejniczak had 28 points when Perry hosted Hoover for the first game of the season, a 56-22 Jayette win. She hit 12-of-16 free throws in that game, but on Wednesday was sent to the line for an amazing 27 attempts, sinking 15. She had 15 field goals and one 3-pointer to account for her 48 points. As a team, Perry was 23-of-40 at the foul line.
Perry led, 18-8, after one quarter and held a 33-22 advantage at the break. Any thoughts of a Huskie comeback were dashed when the Jayettes outscored their guests, 23-11, in the third quarter for a 56-33 lead.
Hoover (1-21) put 25 points on the board in the final eight minutes, but Perry had 18 to more than hold off the charge.
Callie Steva added a career-best 14 points for Perry, who is playing without injured starter Jayna Kenney. Kathryn West provided five points and Litzy Ramirez four, with Maci Tunink tallying three points.
The Huskies drilled 11 3-pointers to account for more than half of their offense, with the team 9-of-11 at the charity stripe.
Tasia Young and Alayna Jarrett each had 20 points and Serenity Nelson 12 for Hoover. Jarrett had five treys and Nelson and Young two each. Jarrett had been held to nine points, Young to eight and Nelson to three in the first meeting between the teams.
Now Perry will focus on ADM, who defeated Perry, in Adel, 59-40, just before the holiday break. The Tigers finished with a decisive 42-21 rebounding advantage and used a 10-point scoring gap in the first frame and a nine-point edge in the third to grab control of the game.
