Hawk harriers start strong at Jester Park

GRANGER, IA — The cross country season for Woodward-Granger started Monday with the Hawks hosting several schools at Jester Park.

The W-G boys won their side, with the host girls second. although W-G freshman Eva Fleshner was the first individual to cross.

The Hawk boys scored 45 points, with West Marshall taking a tiebreaker (sixth runner 17th as opposed to 28th) against Clarke after both scored 60 points. Saydel had 89 points and Baxter 98, with CAM and CR-B having fewer than five runners in action.

Nahum Lock of Saydel won the boys title in 20 minutes, 29.5 seconds, with Landon Cook of CR-B second (although his placing did not count as the Crusaders had an incomplete team) at 20:32.3.

Two Hawks — Carsten Wright (20:44) and Dillon Limoges (20:45.7) — were officially 2-3 to lead the hosts. Cael Leighton (22:16.1) was eighth, Healey Hill (23:46.5) 14th and Aiden Topalovich (24.20) 18th. Also running were Sterling Parkinson (25.15.5, 21st) and Elijah Taylor (26:30.5, 27th).

Wright, Hill and Taylor are seniors, Limoges, Topalovich and Parkinson juniors and Leighton a freshman for the veteran Hawks.

The W-G girls are the opposite, boasting two juniors in Libby Grell and Danika Leuenberger, but then rounding out the roster with five freshmen. Senior Marissa Trees and frosh Talia Wright did not compete Mnnday.

Fleshner crossed in 21:44.6 to win the girls race, with Grell sixth in 27:05.3 and Chloe Creger 10th in 27:47.9. Jaidyn Achenbach (28:23.9) was 12th and Adyson Churchill (29:33.3) 13th, with Leuenberger (29:51, 14th) and Rylee Woodard (32:30.7, 18th) also ran for W-G.

West Marshall’s 28 points won the girls side, with W-G second at 42 and Saydel third (N/A).

W-G returns to action Sept. 1 at Grant Woods Park in Madrid for the Tiger Invite.
