Perry swimmers make trek to Indianola

INDIANOLA, IA — Always one the larger and most talented squads the Perry swimmers face each year, Indianola on Tuesday continued to fit that bill, posting a 115-53 win over the visiting Jayettes in the YMCA pool.

Team points for the hosts included those earned in diving competition, in which Perry does not compete. The Jayettes were winners in four of the 11 events, including the 400 free relay, in which Lilly Riley, Jenna Nelson, Quin Mahler-Moreno and Sophia McDevitt posted a time of 4 minutes, 6.66 seconds.

Mahler-Moreno won the 500 freestyle in 5:21.88 and the 100 breaststroke, in 1:12.57, with Maddie McDevitt fifth in 1:41.28 in her first varsity attempt in the event.

Sophia McDevitt also gave Perry first place points by touching, in 2:28.09, in the 200 Individual Medley.

Riley swam the 100 butterfly in a varsity meet for the first time, placing third in 1:15.3, with Zoe Hibbert second in the 50 free in 27:57 and Maddie McDevitt fifth in 31.58 (first varsity attempt).

Riley used a personal-best 2:19.37 to finish third in the 200 free, with Nelson fourth in 2:23.52 while Hibbert was second (1:01.97) and Nelson fifth (1:06.57) in the 100 free and Sophia McDevitt second (1:08.57) in the 100 backstroke.

The quartet of Hibbert, Mahler-Moreno, Sophia McDevitt and Riley were second in the 200 medley relay in 2:03.9, with Maddie McDevitt, Emily Dowd, Nelson and Hibbert placing third in the 200 free relay in 2:01.

Perry returns to action Thursday with a visit to Des Moines North.
