Perry rallies to capture win over PCM

Visiting PCM held a 2-1 lead over Perry in HOIAC volleyball Tuesday, but the hosts rallied to force a tiebreaker, winning the match with a thrilling 16-14 win in the shortened fifth set.

Perry (6-18, 1-12) has won three of their last four matches. They fell, 25-18, in the opening set, but rallied to claim a 25-23 in the second game. PCM (6-17, 0-2) responded with a 25-12 game three win and looked to have seized control of the match, but Perry prevailed, 30-28, to force the tiebreaker.

Tuesday served as Senior Night for the Perry, with four seniors recognized. Taylor Atwell, Ashley Cerna, Yamilet Ortega, and Kathryn West are all playing their final seasons for the Jayettes.

Taylor Atwell had 12 assists, Yamilet Ortega seven, Miley Sanchez and and Charity Parnell one. Kathryn West had a team-high seven kills, and Ashley Cerna and Maci Tunink six apiece with Parnell adding four. Sanchez had three kills, with Callie Steva one and Ortega one.

The defense was led by 29 digs from Cerna, 15 from Parnell and 11 from West. Yamilet Gonzalez provided eight digs, as did Addison Huntington, with Atwell tallying seven, Steva six, Ortega five and Tunink four, with Kargyn Whelchel making two digs and Miley Sanchez one.

Tunink and Steva each had 1.5 blocks at the net, with West adding two assisted blocks.

Atwell served 11-16-5, Steva 11-14-2, Huntington 7-9-2 and Cerna 15-16-1, with Ortega 12-of-14. Parnell was 7-of-9 behind the line, West 4-of-4, Whelchel 2-of-2 and Tunink 0-for-2. Perry was a combined 69-of-86 (80 percent) but did manage 10 aces.

Perry visits Greene County Tuesday before hosting DM Hoover, DM North and Saydel for a tourney Oct. 6. They will then play in the Indianola tourney Oct. 8.
