Starting Saturday's Class 2A Substate 7 Final against host Hudson for Perry were, from left: Ramon Morales (22), David Cardenas (21), Jesus Rodriguez (18), Ian Velasco (16), Brandon Juarez (15), Ivan Garcia (14), Alvaro Soto (13), Alexis Macias (12), German Alvarenga (7), Miguel Gonzalez (3) and keeper Anthony Aragon (00). Velasco, Cardenas, Soto and Aragon were recently named All-State by the IHSSCA.

Seniors Ian Velasco and David Cardenas, junior Alvaro Soto and sophomore Anthony Aragon were recently named All-State in Class 2A by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Velasco was named to the Class 2A First Team after being a Second Team choice as a junior. A key component to what has become a Perry hallmark — stingy defense — Velasco helped hold 19 opponents to a total of 12 goals scored throughout the season while scoring once and providing three assists of his own.

David Cardenas earned Second Team honors at the midfield spot. He had 15 goals and 10 assists to help power an offense that found the back of the net 53 times in 19 contests.

Honorable Mention status was accorded to defender Alvaro Soto, like Velasco, had one goal and three assists. He, too, was a critical component in turning aside opposing offenses.

Aragon was also named Honorable Mention and was one of only four keepers to earn All-State recognition in 2A. He finished his first year between the pipes with shutouts in nine games as Perry finished 15-4. So strong was the sophomore in goal that half of the goals he yielded came in three games, with six contests played in which he yielded but one score.
