Volunteers from the Perry area will package some 30,000 meals in Wednesday's Meals from the Heartland event.

Volunteers have stepped up, but the cash donations are still a little light for Wednesday’s Meals from the Heartland event, according to Mollie Clark director of marketing for the Perry Lutheran Home.

More than 300 Perry-area volunteers are scheduled for shifts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Perry Lutheran Home Main Campus located at 2323 Willis Ave., more than enough to meet the goal of packaging 30,000 meals destined to feed undernourished people across the U.S. and overseas.

“We’ve got a couple of extra people for each shift,” said Mollie Clark, marketing director for the Perry Lutheran Home. “Our donations have not quite covered the cost of the meals, but we’re getting closer.”

Clark said donations of $6,100 were needed for the content of the meals, and the total now stands at about $5,200.

“We’ve got a couple of feelers still out yet,” she said, “but we don’t have firm commitments for the last $900.”

Among the community donors so far supporting the event are the Christ Lutheran Church, Fareway, Great Western Bank, Hy-Vee, Perry Kiwanis Club, Perry Lions Club, Perry Optimist Club, Raccoon Valley Bank, Perry Rotary Club, Son Foundation, Thrivent and Van Wall. Employees of the Perry Lutheran Home raised $1,100 among themselves, and several PLH board members made donations, Clark said.

“We’re gearing up and ready to roll and are getting ready to see a whole lot of people of Wednesday,” she said.

Accommodations will be available for volunteers needing to sit during their one-hour shifts.
