The 161-year-old Adel Historical Museum has opened a new wing in honor of Nile Clarke Kinnick Jr. and former Iowa Gov. George Washington Clarke.

ADEL, Iowa — Jan Price, longtime curator of the Adel Historical Museum, received the Key to the City from Adel Mayor Jim Peters at the July 13 meeting of the Adel City Council.

Price was recognized for her vision and tireless dedication in bringing the Clarke/Kinnick Addition to reality in 2018.

“As curator, Jan and her husband, Don, have created and built many displays to bring Adel’s history to life,” said Adel City Council member Shirley McAdon. “The museum is one of Adel’s hidden gems.”

George Washington Clarke of Adel was Iowa’s 21st governor from 1913 to 1917 and dean of the Drake University Law School from 1917–1918. He was the grandfather of Nile Kinnick Jr., who won the Heisman Trophy in 1939 while playing for the University of Iowa and died in 1943 when his U.S. Navy plane crashed in the sea off Venezuela.

The Adel Historical Museum is located at 1129 Main St. in Adel.
