Adel man dies Tuesday of injuries from high-speed wreck

Austin Paul Gainuss, 22, died Tuesday at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines from injuries he received Saturday night in a high-speed collision on U.S. Interstate 80 near Des Moines.

An Adel native died Tuesday from injuries suffered Saturday night in a car wreck near Des Moines.

Austin Paul Gainuss, 22, died Tuesday at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, according to Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig.

The vehicle Gainuss was driving about 10 p.m. Saturday was struck from behind near the 139 mile marker of U.S. Interstate 80 by a vehicle traveling at high speed and driven by Travis Gonzales, 37, of Bondurant.

Gonzales was not injured in the crash, Ludwig said.

A passenger in Gainuss’ vehicle, Joshua Lamont Cox, 24, of Prairie City was also killed.

Gainuss was lifeflighted to Iowa Methodist Hospital. He was taken off life support Tuesday, and his donated organs were harvested.

Gainuss, the father of a 2-year-old daughter, was a Carlisle High School graduate. He studied automotive engineering at Des Moines Area Community College from 2013 to 2014 and joined the U.S. Navy in 2015.
