Annual shred event securely destroys sensitive documents

Donning their gloves in the mild autumn weather Saturday morning, Perry Public Library Director Mary Murphy joined Joe Wyllie of Shred-It Des Moines, a document security and shredding service, for the library’s sixth annual free paper-shredding service.

The two-hour event is a regular feature on the library’s October calendar, Murphy said, and is sponsored by the library and the Raccoon Valley Bank. The drive-through shredding service sets up in the parking area between the library and the Des Moines Area Community College Perry VanKirk Career Academy.

Murphy said shredding residents sometimes request twice-yearly service, but at $600 for two hours, the cost is steep.

Wyllie demonstrated the mobile shredder’s internal camera system, which shows the progress of the materials through the shredder. Shred-It Des Moines’ service area includes Des Moines and Ames and stretches from Fort Dodge to Waterloo, Cedar Rapids to Oskaloosa and takes in Ottumwa and the surrounding areas
