Collin Daniel Richards, 22, of no fixed abode faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the Sept. 17 death in Ames of Iowa State University champion golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena. Arraignment is set for Oct. 8.

A trial information was filed Friday in Story County District Court in the case of the homeless man — formerly of Jefferson, Coon Rapids and Bagley — accused of killing champion Iowa State University golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena, 22, at an Ames golf course Sept 17.

Collin Daniel Richards, 22, was charged with first-degree murder Sept. 18 in connection with the death of Arozamena, a native of Puente San Miguel, Spain, whose lifeless body was found in a pond at the Coldwater Golf Links at 1400 S. Grand Ave. in Ames.

An investigation by law enforcement determined Arozamena was assaulted and stabbed in the upper torso, head and neck. Richards was arrested in a wooded area near the golf course, where he was camped.

Story County Attorney Jessica Reynolds said the crime was believed to be a random act of violence.

Story County District Court Judge Bethany Currie approved the trial information shortly before 10 a.m. Friday. An arraigment hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 8.

Richards is being held in the Story County Jail on a $5 million cash-only bond.
