LEE COUNTY, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) released a statement Sunday afternoon saying the Lee County Sheriff’s office responded to a report of a dead body found Sunday in rural Lee County.

Lee County Deputy Sheriffs confirmed the discovery of the body of a white female in her early- to mid-20s, the DPS statement said.

The Lee County Sheriff’s office requested the assistance of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) as well as the DCI’s Crime Scene Team.

“Investigators are keenly aware of the Mollie Tibbetts investigation and have no reason to believe that the decedent is that of Mollie Tibbetts,” the DPS said. “There will be no other comments or statements released at this time in reference to the Lee County death investigation or the Mollie Tibbetts investigation.”

Tibbetts, 20, of Brooklyn was last seen Wednesday, July 18 at approximately 7:30 p.m. while running in Brooklyn. Her last known articles of clothing are believed to be dark-colored running shorts, a pink sports top and running shoes of unknown color.
