Asbestos abatement is scheduled to begin May 1 in the first phase of the $10 million Perry Middle School renovation project.

A threat to blow up the Perry Middle School was found scrawled on the wall of the boys’ bathroom Thursday, according to a joint statement from Perry Police Department Chief Eric Vaughn and Perry Community School District Superintendent.

There is no imminent threat to the safety of the students at the Perry Middle School or other school facilities.

Investigation by law enforcement and school district authorities has identified several possible witnesses and potential suspects, the joint statement said.

No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.

“All threats of this nature are taken seriously by school staff and law enforcement,” Vaughn and Wicks said in their statement. “They are investigated thoroughly to help provide a safe environment for our kids to learn.”

They said police officers and school administrators will be at the schools Friday to provide additional security.
