Bulldog boys run out to early lead to humble Hawks

VAN METER — The Van Meter boys cagers opened a 15-5 lead over visiting Woodward-Granger Friday en route a 30-11 halftime advantage that set the stage for a 58-32 victory.

The Bulldogs, ranked sixth in Class 2A, improved to 13-0 overall and 11-0 in West Central Conference play with the win. Van Meter was a 73-36 winner in Woodward Dec. 9 against the Hawks, who fell to 5-9 and 3-9 with the setback.

Spencer Hanson had 10 points to lead the guests, with Marcus McConahay scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds. Bryce Achenbach had five points, Bodie Harrison four and Brendan Bird three, with a free throw apiece from Reese Jamison and J.P. Nixon completing the Hawk score sheet.

Blake Fryar led Van Meter with 15 points. Ryan Schmitt and Grant Johnson each added 14 points, with the former blocking four shots and the latter three.

Van Meter hit 20-of-41 shots from the floor and 14-of-19 at the foul line while W-G struggled from the floor, connecting on just 11-of-42 field goals, including only 4-of-19 on 3-point attempts. The Hawks were 6-of-8 on free throws.

W-G will host Ogden Tuesday before visiting Madrid Friday.
