A 4-year-old child died Thursday morning after being trapped in the upper floor of a house that was destroyed by fire northwest of Perry.

The Perry Volunteer Fire Department was paged shortly at 8:22 a.m. to the house at 2488 337th St., located next to the Metro Park West Landfill in Greene County.

Residents of the house who escaped the blaze gathered at the Metro Park offices and informed a Rippey firefighter that the child remained inside.

Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams confirmed the fatality. The cause of the fire is unknown at this hour but is under investigation.

Also responding to the fire were the Rippey Volunteer Fire Department, Grand Junction Volunteer Fire Department, Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, Dallas County EMS, Greene County EMS and the Greene County Sheriff’s office.

The property is owned by Anthony Moore, according to records of the Greene County Assessor’s office. The 1,500-square-foot, 1.5 story house was built in 1899.
