The city of Perry weekly yard waste collection will continue until Wednesday, Dec. 5/ The dates for the open burning of yard waste are Wednesday, Oct. 31 until Tuesday, Nov. 20.

At its Monday night meeting, the Perry City Council approved May 1-3 as the dates for the 2017 citywide spring cleanup.

Arrangements for the cleanup days will differ from last year’s. The change in the process is partly caused by the high rate of non-payment, as much as 22 percent citywide and as high as 75 percent in some parts of Perry.

“It’s kind of grown every year and gotten a little worse,” said Perry Finance Officer Susie Moorhead, “but this year we had 22 percent of the bills that weren’t paid. That’s when we decided we needed to do something a little different.”

Perry Public Works Deputy Director Josh Wuebker echoed Moorhead’s claim.

“We said we needed to make some changes when we kind of figured out that one out of four houses are not paying,” Wuebker said. “The city by no means makes any money off it. It’s a negative. So we thought we’d try changing it a little bit this year, and if it doesn’t work out this year, then maybe we’ll have to do something different again next year.”

Details of the new spring cleanup plans will be forthcoming in the next few weeks, according to city authorities.

The city of Perry will also begin its annual residential curbside yard waste pickup Wednesday, April 5 with a citywide collection. The city will end the service Wednesday, Nov. 15. For the full schedule of yard waste pickup dates, click here.
