The first regular February meeting of the Perry City Council will start at 4 p.m., two hours earlier than the usual starting time, in order to give officeholders and others a chance to attend the precinct causes, which start at 7 p.m.

The agenda for Monday’s meeting of the Perry City Council includes two public hearings, one on bids for improvements at the McCreary Community Building and a second on possible eminent domain action by the city in order to acquire property for a new runway at the Perry Municipal Airport.

Old business before the council will also involve paying some bills for the airport and the MCB. Several items of new business will come before the council, including scheduling a public hearing on the proposed maximum property taxes to be raised in fiscal year 2021.

Budget work began Friday morning with a work session bringing together the mayor, city council and heads of city departments. A minor increase in the total levy rate was proposed, from $17.79878 per $1,000 of valuation in fiscal year 2020 to $17.93603 per $1,000 of valuation in fiscal year 2021. Perry’s total taxable property valuation is more than $173 million.

Three appointments to the Perry Historic Preservation Commission are also anticipated. Joining the commission will be local history stalwarts Chris Hinds, Larry Moore and Paula Secress.

Caucus goers should be aware of caucus locations. For Democrats, residents of Perry 1 and Perry 3 precincts will meet at the Perry Middle School, 1200 18th St. Residents of Perry 2 and the Spring Valley precincts will gather at the Perry Elementary School, 1600 Eighth St.

Republicans residing in Perry 1, Perry 2, Perry 3 and Spring Valley precincts and wishing to caucus with the Republican party will meet at the Perry Public Library, 1101 Willis Ave.

Additional county caucus locations are listed below. For more information, visit the Iowa Secretary of State’s website, the nonpartisan Election Information page on Facebook and the Dallas County websites of the county Republican party and county Democratic party.

  1. The property tax is really going up for 2021. There is is no period in the amount $1793603 per $1,000. That is a very big raise in taxes. I think I will have to re-evaluate the worth of living in Perry.
