WOODWARD, Iowa — A large crowd enjoyed the perfect late-summer weather Sunday evening for the first annual Woodward Fire Department Appreciation Dinner.
More than 20 local businesses and organizations sponsored the free meal of hot dogs and hamburgers, which was served in the fire station, with the free-will proceeds going to support the fire department.
Woodward Mayor Todd Folkerts thanked the firefighters for their service to the city of Woodward and to all the residents of the fire district, and he presented a $2,500 check to Woodward Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matt Cavanaugh, donated by the same sponsors of the dinner.
“We can’t tell you how thankful we are to know you’re here and keeping the community safe,” Folkerts said.
The fire trucks were parked in front of the station on S. Main Street, gleaming in the sinking sun, and the ladder trucks were extended and formed into a point from which an American flag fluttered, a fitting reminder of the terrorist tragedy of 2001.
Jim – Nice story on a great Woodward service organization.
