The Contec culvert that replaced the 100-year-old Frog Creek Bridge on Willis Avenue between W. Fourth and W. Fifth streets was overlaid with concrete pavement Saturday morning, and the contractor predicted the project will be completed next week.

A spokesperson for Adair-based Caliber Concrete said the concrete walkways on each side of the bridge remain to be built, and some pedestrian railing must be installed.

Demolition of the bridge began in early April, and July’s heavy rains slowed work on the $753,000 project.

Structural defects in the aging bridge made strict weight limits necessary for many years.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is covering 50 percent of the cost of the bridge replacement, with the city of Perry matching the state funds.
