A fragment of the end cap from the original Frog Creek bridge from 1915 was salvaged during demolition and will be preserved in a manner befitting its historical significance, according to city authorities.

Demolition is nearly complete of the 100-year-old Frog Creek Bridge on Willis Avenue, and construction will soon begin and continue for about two months.

The bridge replacement has forced the closure of Willis Avenue between W. Fourth and W. Fifth streets. The $753,000 project is led by Elder Corp. of Des Moines.

Perry Public Works Director Jack Butler said a north-south sanitary sewer line will be moved and upgraded as part of the rebuild, and the pipe transporting lime from the Perry Water Works will also be adapted to the new construction.

Structural defects in the original bridge made replacement necessary, and the Iowa Department of Transportation is paying 50 percent of the cost of the project, with the city of Perry matching the state funds.

A Contec culvert will replace the former bridge structure. Ornamental railings are designed to match other downtown infrastructure.

The original Frog Creek Bridge was built in 1915 and now exists only in memories and photographs.
