Open burning will be permitted from Monday, Nov. 28 until Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Council member Dr. Randy McCaulley suggested adding the extended burning period when the council took up a resolution adding the extra pickup dates.

“There’s just a ton of leaves yet to fall,” McCaulley said, “so maybe we should add in more time for burning.”

McCaulley was seconded by council member Chuck Schott.

“I think we should add the burning back into it for after the holiday,” Schott said. “I don’t want people burning here over Thanksgiving because there’s a lot of people with visitors in town. But it could start on the following Monday.”

The council unanimously approved extending the dates for managing yard waste.

For yard-waste pickup, all waste, except tree, bush or brush materials, should be placed in paper yard waste bags, with a maximum weight of 40 pounds. The bags should be set near the street curb in front of the residence.

All tree, bush and brush materials should be bundled and tied in maximum lengths of 4 feet, with a maximum weight of 40 pounds, and set near the street curb in front of the residence.

To assure prompt pick-up, have bagged and bundled yard waste at the curb by 7 a.m.

Open burning of yard waste materials will be allowed until Dec. 7. All burning must take place between 10 a.m. and sundown.

Burning is restricted to private property, must take place in the rear of the property and must be supervised at all times.

All burning must be at least 30 feet from any building inhabited by persons other than the landowner or tenant doing the open burning.

The city of Perry encourages residents to find alternative methods to open burning for yard-waste disposal.

Safety tips for open burning include:

Never use gasoline, kerosene or any other flammable liquid to start the fire.
Do not leave a fire unattended.
Have fire extinguishing materials on hand, including a water supply, shovels and rakes.
Be prepared to extinguish the fire if the winds pick up.
Do not delay a call for help – call the Perry Volunteer Fire Department immediately at the first sign of the fire getting out of control at 515-465-4633.

The season on open burning of yard waste ends Wednesday, Dec. 7 at sunset. The city has scheduled two extra pickup dates for yard waste: Wednesday, Nov. 30 and Wednesday, Dec. 7.
