Dallas County voters express themselves in primary election

A little more than 12 percent of the registered voters in Dallas County turned out for Tuesday's primary election.

Perry-area voters expressed their partisan opinions at the polls Tuesday in the 2018 primary election.

Cindy Axne of West Des Moines won the Democratic primary election in Iowa’s third-district U.S. House of Representatives seat and will run against the two-term Republican incumbent, Rep. David Young of Van Meter, in the fall general election. Axne earned 62 percent of 4,713 votes cast by Dallas County Democrats.

Eddie Mauro of Des Moines landed 23 percent of the county’s Democratic votes and Pete D’Alessandro of Des Moines won 14 percent. Axne will face Young and Libertarian candidate Bryan Jack Holder of Council Bluffs in November’s general election.

In contests for the Iowa House of Representatives, the former Iowa House District 43 representative, Chris Hagenow of Windsor Heights, ran unpposed for the Republican nomination in Iowa House district 19, the seat formerly held by retiring lawmaker Ralph Watts of Adel.

The general election in November will see Hagenow face Democrat Gregg Gustafson of Windsor Heights, who secured his party’s nomination Tuesday in his unopposed primary bid.

In Iowa House district 20, Republican Ray “Bubba” Sorenson of Greenfield topped Dodge Michael Perrigo of Redfield for the party’s nomination to fill the seat of longtime lawmaker Clel Baudler of Greenfield.

Warren Varley of Stuart will represent the Democrats in the fall election againt Sorenson for Iowa House district 20.

In the Republican race for Iowa House district 44, Anna Bergman outdistanced her fellow Waukee resident Travis R. Grassel for the nomination. Bergman’s general election opponent will be Democrat Kenan Judge of Waukee, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

In races for Dallas County offices, Dawson Mayor Breanna Morman won the Democratic primary election for the district-one Dallas County Supervisor seat. Morman earned 2,972 votes over fellow Democrat Ryan Morrison’s 1,065 votes, a 73 percent margin of victory. Morman will face Republican incumbent Brad Golightly of Perry in the November general election.

In the three-sided race for the Republican nomination for the third-district Dallas County Supervisor position, incumbent Kim Chapman of Adel outdistanced his challengers, Gene Krumm of Earlham and Robert Greenway of De Soto. Chapman garnered 56 percent of the 1,986 votes cast. Krumm took 26 percent and Greenway 18 percent.

In other races for county office, incumbent Dallas County Attorney Wayne Resietter of Adel ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination, and Chuck Sinnard of Urbandlae was the sole Republican seeking the county attorney spot. They will meet in November’s general election.

Dallas County Treasurer Mitch Hambleton of Dallas Center and Dallas County Recorder Chad Airhart of Waukee also won their primary contests. Both Republican incumbents ran unopposed and at present face no Democrat opponents in the fall.

Countywide voter turnout was about 12 percent of registered voters.
