Dr. Andrea “Andy” McGuire, candidate for the Democratic nomination for Iowa governor, will host a meet-and-greet event Wednesday, April 11 at noon at the Perry Perk coffeehouse at 1201 Warford St.
McGuire is one of six Democrats seeking the party’s nomination. She was born and raised in Waterloo and earned an M.D. degree from Creighton University. McGuire has a background in nuclear medicine, having practiced at the Veterans Health Administration and St. Louis University Medical Center, and she conducted breast cancer research at Washington University.
McGuire later received a master’s degree in business administration and became the chief medical officer at American Republic Insurance Co. and later served as president of Meridian of Iowa, a Medicaid managed care company.
In politics, McGuire was an unsuccessful candidate for Iowa Lt. Gov. in 2006. She served as chair of the Iowa Democratic Party from 2014 to 2016, which included the contentious 2016 caucuses and the divisions within the party between the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders wings.
According to her campaign website, McGuire “is running for governor because she understands the struggles faced by Iowans who are working hard to get ahead. For too long, the people in power have worked behind closed doors for the special interests and themselves. Andy knows it’s time to listen to those who are truly investing in our state — working families.”
She and her husband, Dan McGuire, a native of Holstein, Iowa, live in Des Moines. They have seven children and one grandchild.
