Des Moines man arrested for fighting outside Waukee steakhouse

John Robert Freeman, 51, of Des Moines was arrested Wednesday on charges of assault and third-degree robbery.

A Des Moines man was arrested Wednesday morning in Waukee after allegedly scuffling with an Urbandale man and stealing his cell phone.

John Robert Freeman, 51, of 504 S.E. 34th St., Des Moines, was charged with assault and third-degree robbery.

The incident began about 7 a.m. Wednesday in the 3300 block of Ute Avenue in Waukee, where officers of the Waukee Police Department responded to a report of a fight in progress in the parking lot of Rube’s Steakhouse.

According to court records, Freeman allegedly “elbowed” an Urbandale man in the course of the scuffle “and took his cell phone from him” before he “left in his vehicle with the cell phone after refusing to give it back to the victim.”

Freeman was held in the Dallas County Jail prior to posting a $2,300 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a hearing Dec. 16 in Dallas County District Court.

Freeman was convicted of first-offense domestic abuse assault in 2003 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of second-offense domestic abuse assault in 2004 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of assault in 2008 in Polk County District Court He was convicted of of fifth-degree theft in 2011 and in 2014 in Polk County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is innocent until and unless proven guilty.
