A Tuesday afternoon fire at the Kum & Go store at 409 Nile Kinnick Dr. S. in Adel has closed the business until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

There were no injuries in the blaze, which was quickly brought under control by the Adel Volunteer Fire Department and the Dallas Center Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire was reported about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this hour.

Teffiny Olson, manager of the popular gas station and convenience store at the intersection of U.S. Highway 169 and U.S. Highway 6, said said heavy black smoke was visible coming from a vent in the store and prompted the emergency call.

“This was my first day on the job,” Olson said. “What a way to start.” She said the store would remain closed for today and reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Olson and her four-person crew stood by while by while firefighters sought the source of the smoke and set up exhaust fans to clear the building of smoke.

A firefighter could be heard advising Olson to direct the MidAmerican Energy Co. to restore electrical power to the coolers in the building.
